Silver writing instruments should be handled with gloves or clean hands only. Residues on the skin, such as sweat, lotion or perfume can cause spots and finger prints on the silver parts.

A very soft cleaning cloth for silver should be used to clean the writing instrument. Upon regular use, this cloth removes minor blemishes. More permanent spots, such as finger prints or tarnishing (which can appear after a long period of non-use), can be removed with a special silver polish.

However the material silver ”should be used not polished”. This may sound paradoxical, but when silver articles are used, tarnishing will rarely appear. However, it easily tarnishes or turns black, when the silver article lies idle for a longer period of time. The silver of the Kaweco Sterling Sport is polished and untreated. Silver is a soft noble metal and produces a natrual individual patina, when in regular use. The signs of usage can be diminished through the professional care and reprocessing of a goldsmith.
